Dental Crowns Q & A

What are dental crowns?

Dental crowns, also called caps, are a go-to solution for weak teeth that are still firmly rooted in your mouth. They reinforce the structure and can conceal damage, discoloration, and other aesthetic imperfections. Some issues that crowns can cover include:

  • Chips
  • Cracks
  • Broken teeth
  • Tooth decay

Crowns can also replace missing teeth. If you have a dental implant, the team at Fibonacci Dental Studio can design your crown to fit over the implant instead of over a prepared existing tooth.

Regardless of your reason for needing a crown, the team designs your crown especially for you using your original tooth as inspiration. They can even match the shade of your crown to the shade of your healthy surrounding teeth.

What are crowns made of?

The team at Fibonacci Dental Studio primarily makes crowns from two materials. They help you select the appropriate material for your crown depending on your tooth’s location and your aesthetic preferences. You may choose:

Porcelain

Porcelain crowns are made to look uncannily similar to your natural teeth. They can be color-matched and milled right in the office with a state-of-the-art CEREC® machine the same day your digital impressions are created.

Gold

Gold crowns don’t look like your natural teeth at all, but some patients like their glitzy appearance. They’re best used for teeth in the back of your mouth that need to withstand the full force of your bite. They don’t wear down easily and they don’t cause wear-and-tear on nearby teeth.

What is the process for getting a crown?

The team at Fibonacci Dental Studio prepares your tooth for a crown by reducing its size so that the crown won’t look bulky when placed over it. Then, they use the CEREC Omnicam to scan the inside of your mouth and create a digital impression of your teeth. The Omnicam can also read the shade of your teeth so the team knows which shade to use for your porcelain crowns.

If you’re getting porcelain crowns, the CEREC machine mills them the same day as your appointment. If you opt for gold, you must wait until a second appointment while the team sends your impressions to a lab.

Once the crown is ready, the team at Fibonacci Dental Studio places it over your tooth to make sure that it fits. Then, they cement it onto your tooth or implant abutment.
